Anna University is the largest university in Tamil Nadu, providing technical education. The Tamil Nadu government established Anna University under Tamil Nadu Act. The university adopted its current name after the name of C N Annadurai on 4th September 1978. C N Annadurai was the ex- chief minister of Tamil Naidu.
Currently, Konijeti Rosaiah is the Chancellor and Dr. M Rajaram is the Vice Chancellor of Anna University.
Under Anna Amendment Act, the university became an affiliating university of Tamil Nadu, in 2001. All the private, semi-government and government engineering colleges of Tamil Nadu come under the wings of Anna University. The university consists of six government colleges, three semi-government colleges, and 426 private colleges.
The university has different four departments i.e. College of Engineering (Main Campus), Madras Institute of Technology, Alagappa College of Technology, and School of Architecture and Planning. The university has its branches in various parts of Tamil Nadu. UGC starred Anna University with five-star grades for its excellent technical education.
Since years, the university has provided excellent technical education in various courses of engineering, science and other courses. The courses include bachelor, doctoral and master degree. Also, the university offers distance education courses for students who are unable to regular classes. However, distance courses are only available for students pursuing higher education.
Since 2006, the university conducted entrance test for the admissions in the professional education. But, rules changed and now, the university admits students on account of the marks gained in the qualifying examination. The eligibility criteria for admission necessitate Tamil Nadu citizenship. Besides this, the university also offers lateral entry admission in various courses. Only, B.Sc. graduates and diploma holders apply for lateral entry admissions. However, the university considers the merit list and communal reservation to give lateral entry admissions.
Anna University conducts entrance exam for admission in distance education courses. Students need fulfilling eligibility criteria for admission in Distance education courses. However, passing in the bachelor course is the main eligibility criteria for distance education. Distance education has two batches academic year batches, and calendar year batches. However, the university has allocated different time interval for the two distance education batches.

Anna University follows the dual semester system i.e. odd and even semester patterns. Every year, university conducts odd semester exam in the month of November or December. The university conducts even semester exams in the month of May or June. However, there is little change in exam schedule for the first-semester exam. The first-semester exams, all the courses, start in the month of January.
Distance education system also follows dual semester pattern i.e. the same odd and even semester exam pattern. The university performs odd semester exams in the month of August or September. On the other hand, the even semester exams start in February or March.
Students who fail to meet 50% attendance during their academic years have to redo the same semester. Also, students who fail to get the least passing marks have to reappear in the examination. Supplementary even semester exams commences in May or April and odd semester exams start in November or December. Last year even semester, both the regular and distance learning education courses exams, commenced by the end of April. While, odd semester exams for distance and regular courses began at the start of November. Also, Supplementary exams for the odd semester and the even semester started along with regular exams.
