Periyar University established in 1997 comes under the provisions of the Periyar University Act 1997. The Tamil Nadu government formalized the institution at Salem on 17th September. Also present in Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri. The NAAC accredited it with an “A” grade in 2015. It also got the status of 12(B) and 2f from the UGC. In 2016 it got ranked 47th among 722 top Universities of the country. The ranking places it in the second position in the state of Tamil Nadu.

Periyar University Results and Time table Updates – The institution derives its name from E.V.Ramaswamy, who is also known as “Thanthai Periyar”. The institution follows its motto of “Arrival Vilayum Ulagu” meaning wisdom maketh world. Aiming at the holistic development of the students. The current Chancellor is Konijeti Rosaiah. The present vice-chancellor is Dr C Swaminathan. The current dean is Dr R. Palanivel. At the moment it has 141 Academic staff. The total number of students is 140000.
The institution has its presence across India and other countries through its study centres. It confers its study program at three levels. These are Department of Research, Distance Edu. (PRIDE) and the connected Colleges. Altogether twenty-five departments of various programmes offering Postgraduate and Research learning. With eighty-one other Colleges and five Constituent Colleges. An addon PG Extension Centre is also present.
The administration has introduced credit based system known as The Choice Based Credit System. It has also launched four certificate courses in 2009-2010. The student can access all latest amenities.
